Introduction, First Impression of IS101, Chrome Configuration

Greetings, everyone! My name is Bezhan. I’m 22 years old, a high school graduate, and an avid reader—especially when it comes to history and technology. My biggest inspirations are Lisa Su and Jensen Huang, and I dream of working for a semiconductor or electrical company once I finish my education.

Currently, I’m taking several college courses, and one of my favorites is IS101. It’s an excellent class for getting comfortable with Office applications while also boosting your digital literacy skills. I’ve picked up so many practical tips and tricks that I can immediately apply in my day-to-day life, and it’s been exciting to see how much more confident I feel when navigating the digital world.

One of the most eye-opening lessons I’ve encountered so far is learning about configuring web browsers in section 1.4.6. Let’s face it—most of us use Google Chrome or some other browser daily without giving its settings a second thought. However, after diving deeper into Chrome’s configuration options, I’ve started feeling much safer and more in control whenever I’m online. This simple act of reviewing and adjusting browser settings can make a huge difference in your overall security and privacy.

A particularly useful tip I discovered involves managing whether websites can see your location. By default, some sites request this information for reasons like serving localized content or ads, and often we just click “Allow” without thinking twice. If you’re not comfortable with that, you can simply disable the feature. The process is straightforward: go to Settings, select Privacy and Security, then find Site Settings and locate Location. From there, you can toggle it off or adjust permissions as needed. Once this setting is disabled, you can browse more confidently without worrying about inadvertently revealing your whereabouts.

As someone who hopes to work in a cutting-edge field like semiconductors or electronics, understanding these digital literacy skills is crucial. It’s not just about staying safe online; it’s about building a strong foundation for the technology-driven future ahead. Learning how to protect your personal information, control access to sensitive data, and customize your browsing experience puts you in the driver’s seat rather than at the mercy of default settings.

Thanks for reading about my journey with digital literacy and browser security. If you’re interested in learning more about tech tips, privacy controls, or anything else related to digital literacy, stay tuned! I’ll be sharing more insights from my college courses and experiences as I continue exploring the world of technology and beyond.

  2. Hey Bezhan! It’s awesome to see your passion for technology and digital literacy especially with your goal of working in semiconductors or electronics! IS101 has definitely been eye-opening, and I completely agree that we often overlook browser settings. That tip about managing location permissions is super useful; it’s crazy how much data we unknowingly share. Looking forward to learning alongside you this semester and hearing more of your insights! ^-^

  3. Hello Bezhan! Congrats on starting college after High School, something I wish I did earlier on in my life before having children and making risky life decisions that placed me where I am at right now. I am with you when it comes to sharing my location on the Internet. I usually never allow websites to track my location because it just feels weird. I will definitely be keeping up with your tech tips because, from the sound of it, you have very good digital literacy and understanding of technology for the future.

  4. Hi Bezhan! I think it's great to see how you can point out the importance of the techniques and concepts you are learning from this course and how it relates to you wanting to work with semiconductors and electronics. Browser security is so important and just like you said, most people don't even think twice about what information they may be sharing. Thank you for the helpful tips on how to configure browser settings.

  5. Wow, semiconductors?! I applaud you because I watch in awe when the engineers at the hospital must come to trouble shoot our equipment. I am right there with you on feeling safer after adjusting browser settings. You also hit the nail on the head about just clicking "allow" when prompted to by sites. I used to just click right through because I found it a nuisance and didn't really read into it until the ads started getting too personal.

  6. Hey Bezhan! Pursuing a career in a semiconductor or electrical company after finishing school is a great choice. Google Chrome is one of the main browsers I use frequently, so I appreciated the instructions on where to find and adjust the location permission settings. When downloading apps on my phone, I always try to make sure to turn off location tracking, camera permission, and microphone permission to maximize my privacy and security as much as possible.

  7. Hey Bezhan, I really loved reading your post! It’s awesome how much you’re learning in IS101 and how you’re already applying those digital literacy skills to improve your security. The tip about controlling location permissions is super helpful. I had no idea how simple it was to adjust. It’s cool that you’re focusing on building a strong tech foundation for your future career in semiconductors. Keep sharing your insights; I’m sure many of us can benefit from your tips and experiences.

  9. Hey Bezhan!

I totally agree with you in your fourth paragraph, "It’s not just about staying safe online; it’s about building a strong foundation for the technology-driven future ahead." I think it's great that you want to learn more about technology, it just keeps expanding so it sounds like it will be as equally challenging and interesting to take on. I must ask, why do you look up to the two individuals you mentioned? I look forward to reading about your tips, the one you just provided was super helpful already!

  10. Hi Bezhan,

I really enjoyed reading your post. It seems like you are very passionate about semiconductors and electronics. I’m someone who doesn’t keep location tracking on and I changed my settings to ask all the time. I would like to say that I too am an avid reader, but of fantasy books. I would recommend Brandon Sanderson.

  11. Man electrical engineering and semiconductors are completely out of my area of expertise, I think I'm gonna just stick to regular IT.

  12. Hi Bezhan,

Like you, I was shocked to find out how much of our information is being tracked by the sites we visit. By configuring my web browsers I also got rid of the unwanted tracking and especially unwanted ads by stopping third party tracking.

I look forward to learning along side you and our classmates in IS 101, and wish you nothing but success in your future.

  13. Hi Bezhan,

I also learned so many small things in this class that have super helped my digital literacy skills! My husband is also working towards a similar career in IT but I know he would think what you're doing is interesting so I'm going to bring it up to him. I wish you the best of luck in your field!

  14. Hi Behzan,

I like what you mentioned about Google Chrome. I think so many of us get accustomed to staying on the surface level when it comes to the internet when in reality there is so much more going on than what is in front of us. I hope to feel more comfortable diving deeper into what is going on behind the screen.

  15. Hi Behzan, IS101 also helped me improved my digital literacy, as I work as a front desk agent, so I am constantly using the computer. I love how your blog is welcoming, and interesting especially since you plan on making it a series about digital literacy.

  16. Hi Bezhan, it’s good to have inspirations, they definitely give us a boost to get ahead. Yes, what’s amazing about this class is that the skills that we’re learning we’re using them outside of class and on a daily. Almost everything is digital now so boosting our digital literacy is the way to go. About the location, I agree with you, on majority of my apps I don’t have the location on just because it can be scary. I only share my location with my parents, my work app, and Uber Eats :)
